As with most towns, Motueka began with a main street, in this case High Street. At the southern end was the Swan Hotel, since updated to a McDonalds franchise. At the northern end, Hotel Motueka. In between was the Post Office, the Post Office Hotel and gradually many other businesses began. Many descendants of those early settlers still run farms and businesses around the town and environs.
