Take Landess Road, staying to the right onto Shields Lane. Shields is a private road, but the cemetery has a right of way to use the road. Visitors are welcome during daylight hours only. As you slowly drive up the hill, please stay on the paved driveway only!
Welcome to Shields Pioneer Cemetery named after William Shields who settled here in 1851. The cemetery is located on the original land claim, though much of the rest is now the City of Cottage Grove. The housing development to the west is in the city limits. Twenty years ago this neighborhood was all forest. This cemetery is the resting place for several of my relatives, so my family volunteers to help maintain this special place and serve on the cemetery association board. Please walk gently and with respect as you visit.
This geocache is placed as a memorial to my mom who was a lover of nature. Digging dirt in her flower garden was among her favorite pastimes. She enjoyed watching swallows and gold finches, considered otters most adorable, collected shells, rocks and driftwood at the Oregon Coast and found value in all living things...including spiders. She would carefully take spiders outside if they were found alive indoors.
