When the canal was built it wasn’t locked in that it’d be a success. It took a profile in courage and engineering to bring it up to the level of success we know of today. The original canal had 83 lift locks: you’re standing in one of them now! It was through a series of highs and lows that barges made it from Buffalo to Albany.
