This Cache is placed as part of the 2022 Taconic Region Geocaching Challenge. Please see FA 1 for more information. This cache contains a unique stamp which must stay with the cache. Use this stamp to mark your passport and your letterbox book (if you have one). This stamp is NOT a trade item and must remain in the cache. This is a letterbox hybrid cache.
This cache is placed along the Old Mine trail which can be accessed from Sunken Mine Road or from the Three Lakes trail. The parking coordinates are for a lot at the north end of Sunken Mine Rd that is about ½ mile from the trail head. During the summer you can also park in one of several individual spaces along Sunken Mine Road, which is dirt but mostly well graded. The trailhead coordinates indicate where the Old Mine trail reaches Sunken Mine Rd. The cache is not at the posted coordinates which indicate the intersection between the Old Mine trail and the Three Lakes trails. To find the cache, you must first find a mammoth erratic located somewhere along the Old Mine trail between the above intersection and Sunken Mine Rd. The erratic looms over the trail and looks ready to crush unsuspecting hikers except for the fact that it is held back -- or is it ? -- by two birch trees. If you have any doubts about whether you’ve found the correct erratic, you clearly have not. Once you have found the erratic, stand in the trail in front of the beast and note your coordinates. The actual cache is placed under a smaller cousin of the erratic at an offset of: North +0.081 minutes, West: -0.072 minutes from where you are standing.
