Mesopotamia is home to a portion of the Middlefield community, the second-largest Amish community in Ohio and the fourth-largest in the nation. The historic district — also known as the Commons — features 21 buildings built before the Civil War that are all included on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the 21, is the oldest general store in Ohio. Every summer, the annual Ox Roast and Antique and Flea Market, where 4,500 pounds of beef are served over a weekend, features dealers selling all types of wares and live music. The Commons also hosts an annual Fall Heritage Day exhibiting craftsmanship and homemade food.
