Built in 1835 for Sydney barrister, Sydney Stephens. He called the road that fronted his ten acres near the river, Stephen Street, and constructed the house from bricks that were locally made.
Kelso was the birthplace of Lady Brisbane, wife of the NSW Governor at the time. When this house was built in the 1830's, Kelso was considered the city, Bathurst the penal settlement. It was not until the railway crossed the Macquarie River and the Bathurst railway station opened in 1876, that the balance changed, and Kelso just became a village.
