The Granger Recreation Center is located in Garland's Central Park, a Lone Star Legacy Park filled with rich Garland history. It was named for Fred Picora Granger whose family ties to Garland go back to his grandfather, an Italian immigrant, who owned a shoe repair store on the Downtown Square.

Granger was born on February 2, 1923, and went on to a distinguished career with the U.S. Air Force. He served as a member of the Garland City Council, Garland Jaycees, and was an avid park advocate. The building known today as Granger Recreation Center once served as an army surplus barrack and was turned into Garland’s first community center as part of park improvements funded by the Garland Jaycees in 1961. The recreation center and annex building were dedicated in 1971 and formally named Granger Recreation Center and Annex.

Today, Granger Recreation Center is home to many basketball tournaments and other fun activities serving the Central Park community.
