Shide Chalk Pit is a former industrial site which is now a haven for wildlife on the edge of Newport. The site was quarried for chalk during the first half of the 20th Century. A branch line used to bring trains into the pit from the main railway that ran through Shide, to collect the chalk. The tunnel where trains once entered the pit can still be seen to the left of the steps that take you down into the pit itself.
This is the 1st in a series of 5 caches in and around Shide Pit. It can be found to the left of the main entrance, along the road. We had to put it a little away from the entrance so it wasn't within the zone of any other caches. Apologies if the GPS bounces a bit here. Thanks to Gift to Nature for permission to place this series of caches.
