Shide Chalk Pit is a former industrial site which is now a haven for wildlife on the edge of Newport. The site was quarried for chalk during the first half of the 20th Century. A branch line used to bring trains into the pit from the main railway that ran through Shide, to collect the chalk. The tunnel where trains once entered the pit can still be seen to the left of the steps that take you down into the pit itself.
This is the 4th in a series of 5 caches in and around Shide Pit. It can be found at the top of the pit, within sight of the look out tower. The main way to the top of the pit is bridleway A45. Thanks to Gift to Nature for permission to place this series of caches.
For a round trip back to the pit entrance (if you have been doing the pit series in order), back track a little towards the look out tower and rejoin the A45 bridleway. It will then take you to a great look out point over and into the pit, before going down to burnt house lane and joining with path N21 which takes you back round to Pan Lane where the pit entrance is.
