Geocache Description:

Overbridge on Tweed Street.

There never used to be a bridge here but due to increasing rail traffic on the rail yard with shunting movements it was decided a bridge was needed.

The original overbridge was a 4 lane road bridge which was good for the cars heading out to the beach, the airport and thoses heading into town to get to work, on time.

Too bad if you were biking or walking, there was no provision for that on the bridge. Those brave souls ran the guantlet across the train tracks. This was usually safe enough but not rail policy for pedestrians to cross an uncontrolled section of rail.

Solution to put up a fence on the Otatara side of the tracks. Not a long fence just enough to try to discourage the honest walkers and riders. Yep you got it holes appeared on the fence big enough to easily go through and cross the tracks.

This was the situation for decades. The railways not happy, commutors on bikes and walkers not happy. Solution- yep fix the fence have one both sides and make it real long.

Something needed to be done, so the ICC fixed it. They blocked off one lane on the south side and created a biking walking lane.

This is what it is today. To make it even safer Tweed St Slip West Lane on the SW  corner is blocked off to traffic to exit into Tweed St..

What this bridge has to offer: 3 vehicle lanes, 1 pedestrian cycle lane;

under it: 4 vehicle lanes, 2 railtracks.

This could be Bridge # 1 on the Invercargill Bluff line.

Parking access. Suggest park on Tweed St Slip W or around the corner on Mersey St.  Just watch out for cars going to recycle stuff down the Street. Not really accessable from the walking lane.

You need a pen.
