Shide Chalk Pit is a former industrial site which is now a haven for wildlife on the edge of Newport. The site was quarried for chalk during the first half of the 20th Century. A branch line used to bring trains into the pit from the main railway that ran through Shide, to collect the chalk. The tunnel where trains once entered the pit can still be seen to the left of the steps that take you down into the pit itself.
This is the 3rd in a series of 5 caches in and around Shide Pit. It can be found under a tree by a small clearing in the woods. The area can be accessed by turning right at the main entrance to the pit and following the path across the field then through the woodland. Or from the A45 bridleway. The terrain is steep and uneven in places and can be slippery. Thanks to Gift to Nature for giving us permission to place this series of caches.
