Before the M1 motorway fully opened chances are if you travelled from Dublin to Drogheda, Dundalk or Belfast you would have passed by here on the old N1.
The Cock Taven of Gormanston claimed to a contender for the 'oldest pub in Ireland'.
Reputedly licensed since 1390, legend has it that during penal times a sympathetic network of local tunnels ensured a continuity of whiskey supply to ‘that place of peace and plenty called ‘The Cock of Gormanston.’
It is also said that Oliver Cromwell tarried here while on his way to Drogheda with 13.000 men while mail coaches between Dublin and Belfast made ‘The Cock’ their main staging post.
It was also a favourite haunt of Michael Collier, the country’s most famous highwayman, who was finally captured there in November 1807.
It was also apparently the first pub outside of Dublin to serve Guinness!
Balbriggan was bypassed by the M1 in 1998. The pub closed down in the early 2010's.
