The original Corinthian colony of the 8th century BC came under Macedonian, Roman, Byzantine, French, Venetian and English occupation over time before being united with the Greek state in 1864. This cosmopolitan atmosphere is reflected in the city's imposing buildings and squares. The old town of Corfu has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007.
The ancient town of Corfu was located on the site of the peninsula of Kanoni, which is now a suburb of Corfu town. After a devastating raid by Goths, the city was rebuilt on the site of the present Old Fort. During the Venetian occupation, the city's two castles (the Old Fort and the New Fort) were built, which are now considered masterpieces of military architecture.

Η αρχική κορινθιακή αποικία του 8ου αιώνα π.Χ. πέρασε από μακεδονική, ρωμαϊκή, βυζαντινή, γαλλική, βενετσιάνικη και αγγλική κατοχή με την πάροδο του χρόνου, πριν ενωθεί με το ελληνικό κράτος το 1864. Αυτή η κοσμοπολίτικη ατμόσφαιρα αντικατοπτρίζεται στα επιβλητικά κτίρια και τις πλατείες της πόλης. Η παλιά πόλη της Κέρκυρας έχει καταχωριστεί ως Μνημείο Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιάς της UNESCO από το 2007.

Chr. geriet im Laufe der Zeit unter makedonische, römische, byzantinische, französische, venezianische und englische Besatzung, bevor sie 1864 mit dem griechischen Staat vereinigt wurde.
