The Monroe County Confederate Monument
This statue was dedicated in 1901. My grandmother who was 16 at the time rode horseback, sidesaddle of course, nearly 20 miles to join the crowd of 10,000 for the ceremony. To put that in perspective, there were 13,000 residents of the county at that time.
Morton's “A History of Monroe County West Virginia”, 1916, puts the attendance at 12,000, including about 250 veterans. The unveiling was done by 15 young ladies.
The signs here tell of the rich history all around the area.
