The climb is from 219m to 340m with rewarding views along the way. Flounders Folly is situated on Callow Hill in South Shropshire and was built by Benjamin Flounders in 1838.
The tower is built from local stone, 80ft. high and 16 foot sides, with two foot thick walls and small slits of windows. There are various stories about why Flounders built the tower. These vary from the theory that he wanted to create work for the unemployed to the rather fanciful idea that he wanted to be able to see his ships on the Bristol Channel or the River Mersey. It might just have been built as a viewing point to mark where four estates met. The restored tower is normally open from 11:00 till 15:00 on the last Sunday of the month and Bank Holidays but you had better check on the website.
