This park pays tribute to people from the Avis and surrounding areas who have served our country. Dedicated on Veteran’s Day in 2016, creation of the park was spearheaded by then Avis Borough Councilman William Norman and, following his death, completed by his family. Today the part is maintained by the Borough. A memorial wall lists the names of veterans and their era of service. The 60-ton Army tank was relocated to Avis from the Johnstown area. Another military tank is situated at the other end of the community at the Avis American Legion
This spot is a great place to remember our Veterans and show respect for them. We should also treat our first responders with respect as we travel. Drivers must move over or slow down for all responders, including police, fire, and ambulance crews, as well as, stopped tow trucks and maintenance vehicles in Pennsylvania. Additionally, a similar regulation requires motorists to move over or slow down when approaching a stationary trash or recycling truck. Failure to move over or slow down will result in a citation that carries a fine of $500 for first time offenders, $1,000 for a second offense, and $2,000 for a third or subsequent offense. Penalties are increased for incidents that seriously injure or kill someone.
