History:
The Jetty wall extends from the Ocean along the southern tip of the Ocean Shores Peninsula, and opens into the Grays Harbor Bay. It's about 20 feet above low water mark, extends 1,500 feet offshore.
Six rivers flow into Grays Harbor before reaching the ocean. As the harbor widens, the currents decrease in velocity, allowing suspended silt and sand to settle on the bottom. This buildup of sediments requires yearly dredging in the harbor to maintain the necessary channel depths for navigation. At the harbor entrance, these sediment deposits have been reduced since 1916 through construction and maintenance of the jetty by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Construction began in about 1908 and was completed in 1916; rehabilitated in 1941-1942; then again in 1974-1975. The first government survey was made in 1858.
The jetties act as walls reducing ocean sands carried by flood tides and wave action from entering the harbor.
The cashe:
We chose the spot for our first geocashe in memory of my father. He passed away in the summer of 2018. He always told us he wanted his ashes let out at the The North Jetty in Ocean Shores. A group of 10 or so climbed our way out onto the jetty and had a ceremony. Every year no matter where we are, we come visit him for his birthday. If your here on May 27th would you wish him a totally TUBULAR birthday?
