Lost in Pearl Bay
In 1971, a German and a Spanish traditional pearl hunters (from Hamburg and from Grau de Castelló) traveled to Busuanga Island, Philippines, to make fortune searching for a very rare type of pearl. After three months in an almost uninhabited part of the island, on 2 May their seaplane took off on what looked like a sunny day with a cargo valued at USD 3 million. Few minutes later, Tropical Storm Wanda hit Coron and forced them to make an emergency landing on the water and the mangroves. For two months, without any communications or supplies, and both badly injured, they survived fishing from the boat and collecting rain water, until they were found by a fishermen that took care of them at his house. To thank the fishermen for saving their lives, they shared their cargo and decided to settle in the Island. The German pearl hunter opened a scuba-diving school. No one knows what happened with his Spanish companion, although villagers say that he can often be seen around the area on his sailing boat. The seaplane remains in the same place were they crashed in 1971.
