Trattasi di una cavità che si apre nei conglomerati fluviali affioranti lungo la sponda sinistra del torrente Natisone e venne scoperta come località di frequentazione preistorica negli anni Ottanta dello scorso secolo, grazie all’attività del Circolo Speleologico e Idrologico Friulano.
Il Museo Friulano di Storia Naturale e l’Università degli Studi di Ferrara condussero scavi stratigrafici tra il 1982 e il 1985, aprendo un sondaggio che si spinse sino alla profondità di 1,5 metri e che permise di indagare un interessante deposito con 6 livelli di frequentazione, compresi tra Paleolitico superiore e prime età dei metalli.
I vari livelli hanno restituito industrie in pietra scheggiata – sia in selce sia in cristallo di rocca – e in materia dura animale; dai soli strati più recenti provengono alcuni frammenti ceramici, che sono stati riferiti al Neolitico e all’età del rame. Sono state, inoltre, raccolte lungo quasi tutta la stratigrafia sostanze coloranti (minerali di ocra) e conchiglie forate.
L’ambiente e le attività svolte al Riparo di Biarzo sono documentate anche dai resti faunistici, tra cui mammiferi superiori, micromammiferi, pesci e molluschi, e dai carboni. Il solo livello Epigravettiano è stato datato al radiocarbonio e ha restituito la seguente data: 11.150 ± 150 BP (R-1850).
Il museo ha recentemente promosso, in collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Biologia ed Evoluzione – Sezione di Paleobiologia, Preistoria e Antropologia dell’Università degli Studi di Ferrara, il riesame di alcune categorie di reperti, anche alla luce delle nuove opportunità che la scienza offre alla comprensione dei contesti preistorici.

This is a cavity that opens into the fluvial conglomerates emerging along the left bank of the Natisone stream and was discovered as a prehistoric location in the eighties of the last century, thanks to the activity of the Friulian Speleological and Hydrological Circle.
The Friulian Museum of Natural History and the University of Ferrara conducted stratigraphic excavations between 1982 and 1985, opening a survey that went up to a depth of 1.5 meters and which allowed to investigate an interesting deposit with 6 levels of frequentation, between the Upper Paleolithic and early metal ages.
The various levels have returned industries in chipped stone - both in flint and rock crystal - and in hard animal matter; only the most recent layers come from some ceramic fragments, which have been referred to the Neolithic and the Copper Age. Furthermore, coloring substances (ocher minerals) and perforated shells were collected along almost the entire stratigraphy.
The environment and the activities carried out at the Riparo di Biarzo are also documented by the faunal remains, including higher mammals, micro-mammals, fish and molluscs, and by the coals. The Epigravettian level alone was radiocarbon dated and returned the following date: 11,150 ± 150 BP (R-1850).
The museum has recently promoted, in collaboration with the Department of Biology and Evolution - Section of Paleobiology, Prehistory and Anthropology of the University of Ferrara, the re-examination of some categories of finds, also in light of the new opportunities that science offers to understanding of prehistoric contexts.
