Geocache Description:

This is a Cache to Eagle cache.  The following are excerpts pulled from a great piece found on "Enjoy the Wild" by Brian John.

The Fire Pit that you will see before you was created in 2019 by Mr. Aaron Klemz of Enola PA, Eagle Scout, Troop 279, for his Eagle Project.

The Benefits of a Campfire

1. Source of light.

The light will enable you to see everything around the campsite. The campfire is the most reliable method in case other methods like solar lanterns or torches fail.

2. Campfire makes you feel free in a conversation.

People tend to be shy due to fear of being judged by their audience hence they end up not expressing themselves fully. When you position yourself next to a campfire, you can talk and express yourself fully since everyone’s attention will be on the campfire. You will get the courage to speak as the campfire will become everyone’s focal point.

3. Reflection of the past.

A campfire will help you reflect on your past as you relax. Reflection being one of the benefits of a campfire will bring joy to you as you recall the moments you have had with your fellow Scouts. Seating next to a campfire and looking into it can lighten up the not-so-pleasant moments in your past, and after all these times you may find yourself laughing loud about them as you get to see them from a totally different angle.

4. Campfire for warmth

When it’s cold, sitting around a cozy fire will definitely be what you would be looking forward to. A campfire provides a comfortable experience as it generates a calm heat that will leave you warm and calmer.

5. Campfire for cooking

A campfire takes care of purifying your drinking water and enables you to cook while on excursions.  It also helps scouts practice other methods of cooking (other than stovetop) such as with foil packs or pre-heating dutch ovens. This certainly makes your camping experience more fun and at the same time very delectable!

6. Entertainment for free

Listening to the crackling sound of a campfire accompanied by its distinctive smell that penetrates through your nose creates a feeling that only one word can describe: amazing. It is very entertaining just sitting and watching the firelight burn through the night.

7. Uplifts your spirit

When staring at a campfire, you will notice the flickering light and sparks produced by the fire as they rise towards the sky. On following these sparks towards the sky, you end up focusing your attention on the moon and the stars in the sky. This is when you realize how beautiful the sky is and hence appreciate nature. What a sight!

8. Campfire for security

Predators are often scared away by fire. Therefore, when you are out there camping, and you light your campfire, be assured that no wild animals will even attempt to get close. Your safety will be guaranteed. Campfires also act as beacons as they can be seen from a distance. For any campsite, there must be at least one campfire,

Campfire safety tips

It is important to know about the safety measures you should observe when you are around campfires.

 Always use designated pits. The pits should be on gravel, not grass. This is because grass easily catches fire and may end up spreading fire and ruining your camping experience.

 Clear the area before building a campfire.Always make sure the area is free from dry leaves and sticks. Also, make sure that the tents and other items are away from the campfire.

 Avoid using flammable liquids for igniting the campfire. Using flammable liquids such as diesel and other gasoline can cause serious damage and injuries since they are highly flammable. Homemade fire starters are ideal for getting your fire lit.

 Make sure you have extinguished the fire completely. Once you have no use for your campfire, ensure that you put it out and leave no burning ambers. Use the water that you have positioned next to the fire. This is to ensure that the fire is completely out before you leave the site.

I hope you enjoy this Cache!
