Inspired by President Nixon's visit to China in 1972, Elvis' lifetime manager, Colonel Parker, had the notion to bring Elvis to the world via the first live satellite broadcast(from a single performer).
Presley had been gigging steadily for four years at this point, but he’d never played a single show outside of North America. Demand to see him was extremely strong in Europe and throughout much of Asia and Presley was eager to book the shows, but his manager Colonel Tom Parker (born Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk in the Netherlands) was in America without proper papers and feared deportation if he ever stepped outside U.S. borders.
The satellite broadcast idea was genius! The performance took place at the Honolulu International Center Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii, on January 14, 1973. There was no cost of admission; instead each audience member was asked to pay whatever he or she could afford. The concert raised close to half a million dollars in modern equivalent for cancer research. It is estimated between 1 and 1.5 billion viewers watched the king’s special in over 40 countries.
This cache will take you to an island on Patriot(now Hyde)Lake. A non-motorized water vessel under 14' will be needed to obtain the cache, so a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard would be ideal. If needed, Shelby Farms does have rentals available. You will be looking for an ammo can marked with geocache stickers. One does not and should not leave their vessel to obtain the cache. Bring your own writing utensil, but most importantly, be safe and take time to take in the moment. The landscape and wildlife are beautiful. Life is precious; Namaste.
