Geocache Description:

Forgotten Sand Creek

This cache is not located on or near any gravestone.

This one doesn't quite fit into the MLT as it Sand Creek never developed to more than a country school and church, the latter of which did not exist for long. To the immediate east of the cemetery sat the Sand Creek Methodist Episcopal Church, which was active from 1861 to the early 1920s. The school was founded in 1866 and remained in operation until 1940s. The school house still exists, though it has been moved into town for use as a historical society. Up until a few years ago, its site a few places east of here was still evident though the most recent user of the land has tore up the property quite a bit.

The posted coordinates will take you to the grave site of Charles & Cynthia Townsend. This starting point was chosen for a couple of reasons, one is that they were the longtime residents (possibly builders) of my home. Secondly, Cynthia was the first school teacher at the nearby school. Both of them were born in New York before migrating to Michigan as well as some other family. Cynthia would live the rest of her life at what is now my home. Charles would move into town for the last couple years of his life, while his son maintained the farm. Secondly and more pertaining to this cache, Cynthia was the first teacher for the nearby school from 18xx to 18xx.
