Patrolman Charles Skelly of the St. Joe police department was shot and killed by one of Al Capone's hitmen. The hitman had been in a minor accident with a local. He wanted to pay for the repairs and not call the cops in.  On the way to the repair shop the citizen flagged down Charles who on foot. The hitman then tried to drive away - Skelly jumped on the running board of the vehicle. The man then opened fired - hitting Skelly in the chest knocking him to the ground.  He is buried in the Crystal Spring Cemetery at Fair Plain, Berrian County.
