Town Creek flows in a southwesterly direction across Timmins. This multicache will take you to two significant locations along the creek.
At the posted coordinates, you will not see the creek, but it is more or less beneath your feet. The creek goes underground from Algonquin and Theriault, and reappears at Belanger and Fogg. Although you won't see the creek here, you will find a plaque that describes a significant flooding event. A mother and four children died when the creek flooded after a major rainstorm, and this was an impetus to reroute the creek and make sure it never happened again.
To find the final location, enter the following numbers into N 48° 28.ABC' W 81° 20.DEF':
- A: the number of the month in which the flood occurred, divided by 2 (e.g. December would be 12÷2=6)
- B: the first digit of the day of the month in which the flood occurred
- C: same as B
- D: second digit of the year in which the flood occurred
- E: third digit of the year in which the flood occurred
- F: third digit of the year in which the plaque was placed
The final is located near the mouth of Town Creek at the Mattagami River.
