About Toledo Railroad History
The Toledo Train station no longer exists, the Post Office is close to where the original station would of been. The Corvallis and Yaquina Bay Railroad was incorporated in 1872. By 1885, the final spike was laid allowing trains to run from Corvallis into Toledo. The Railroad changed ownership a few times, with at one point was thought to be a part of a new transcontinental railroad. Yaquina City, just east of today's Newport was the railroad's western terminal and was considered to grow into a San Francisco-sized port. That was not to be. The railroad never went east of Idanha (east of Detroit, Oregon), although right-of-way was built around Hogg Rock by Santiam Pass. Yaquina City never became the huge port as expected, so the tracks were pulled up between Toledo and Yaquina City. Trestles are still visible along Bay Road.
The Railroad, now a part of the Portland & Western still runs to Toledo and remains busy with the mills in the city. The history of the railroad is kept alive by the Yaquina Pacific Railroad Historical Society. They maintain a museum here with some railroad equipment and displays. There is also an old Steam Locomotive under cover.
