Facts About The Hotel Del: ______________________________

Built in 1888, the Hotel del Coronado is one of the last surviving wooden Victorian beach resorts in the world. It’s also the second-largest such structure in the United States. Stately silhouettes, Norman-style interior designs, and an assortment of towers and turrets are among the grand architectural features that can be seen here.

Over the decades, the hotel fondly referred to by locals as “The Del” has attracted a long list of notable visitors. It’s an impressive list that includes nearly a dozen U.S. presidents and well-known figures, both past and present, including Marilyn Monroe, Babe Ruth, Lauren Bacall, Charlie Chaplin, Brad Pitt, Jack Nicholson, and Oprah Winfrey.

Some claim The Del is haunted. One of these spirits is believed to be Kate Morgan, who came to the hotel for Thanksgiving in 1892. She took her own life nearly a week later, and it’s said her spirit still wanders here. There have also been reports of otherworldly activity in the gift shop and on the grounds.

Thomas Edison came to the Hotel del Coronado shortly before it opened to oversee the installation of electric lighting. When everything was in place, The Del became the first commercial structure to be illuminated by electricity. On a related note, Edison returned in 1904 to debut the world’s first lighted Christmas tree, which stood on the hotel’s lawn.

It has been rumored that L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, modeled the book’s famed Emerald City after The Del. While this claim is disputed, it’s a fact that Baum and his wife stayed at the resort on several occasions. Also, the hotel’s website points out Mr. Baum designed the crown-shaped chandeliers found in the Crown Room. Incidentally, a group of surviving actors who had played Munchkins in the film adaptation of the book gathered at the hotel in 1988 to celebrate The Del’s centennial.

The piano virtuoso was “discovered” in 1950 when he was tickling the ivories at the Hotel del Coronado. On that fateful night, the entertainer almost canceled his show because the audience was small, but he didn’t—and it was for the best. A TV producer caught his performance, and Liberace got his first big break.

Shortly before starring together in the iconic television series I Love Lucy, Ball and Arnaz fine-tuned their act at the Hotel del Coronado. The hotel was even featured in an episode of the show. Many other TV shows and movies, including the classic Some Like it Hot, have been filmed here over the years.
