Hopukiore is the Maori name for Mount Drury. It is well known that Maori had occupied Hopukiore and was used by the Maori as a carving school. The name Hopukiore literally means to catch rats. The rats teeth were used as blades in their carving chisels.
Nowadays the local people used it for picnics and small open air concerts and entertainment.
