Geocache Description:

To find the final coordinates for this cache, you will need to complete the Broadway-Phelps Historic District Adventure Lab. The posted coordinates take you to the Phelps Park Parking Area, which is very near the last stop on this lab. We've included a trailhead waypoint. The trail from the parking area starts out as limestone slabs, then changes to a dirt path. It will be about a half-mile round trip walk on the upper part of the hillside. (Note: This is NOT the paved trail below along the Upper Iowa River.)

There is also a waypoint listed for another way to access this trail from the parking area at Shulze Kiln. It will only be about a quarter mile round trip walk from there. The trail access there starts next to the small picnic shelter that is by the Decorah Parks Maintenance buildings.

The actual terrain rating of this hike is a 2.5 but has been raised due to some steep slopes and drop-offs at times along the bluff. Do not take this trail if it is snowy, icy or slippery. The cache itself is winter friendly. There are also a few steps to navigate. It is a delightful, scenic, shaded trek with no bushwhacking.

Phelps Park is part of the Broadway Phelps Historic District. George Phelps was a Welsh immigrant who settled in Decorah in 1851. He was a successful wagon and buggy maker and a dealer in carriages, farm implements and machinery. Upon the deaths of George and his wife, Anna, they left a bequest to be used by the Park Commission. The former “City Park” was renamed as “Phelp’s Park”.

The park was established in 1911. The original fountain was built in 1934 and renovated in 1974. The bandstand has a unique log and half log construction and is still used for live music and events. The elaborate stone and wood walkway serves as the entrance to Phelps Park Trail. The scenic Phelp’s Park Trail winds west along the bluffs of the Upper Iowa River and meets up with the Trout Run Trail near “The Cut”, and the Decorah Campground.
