The WSGA’s 20th Anniversary GeoTour will end on December 31, 2024, at 11:59pm PT.
You will only have until this date and time to find the geocaches, post all of your logs for the digital souvenirs (if qualified), and submit all of your passports of unique codes for the geocoins (if qualified). There will be no exceptions.
With all that said, cache on!
Cape Horn
This is WSGA Southwest Chapter cache #8 in the 2022 WSGA 20th Anniversary GeoTour. The Cape Horn Scenic Overlook is just 500' east of the GZ. The views of the Columbia Gorge are just fantastic from there. We placed this cache up the road a bit with easier east-bound parking and decent accessible hiding spots. Host and container are magnetic, but not what or where you expect. Enjoy the surprise!
IMPORTANT GZ ACCESS INSTRUCTIONS --- EASTBOUND: Due to fast traffic and tight parking availability, this cache is intended to be accessed only when traveling east. SLOW DOWN approaching GZ or you will miss it and have to continue on to the Overlook. SLOW DOWN when you reach the “ROCKS” sign. Only 700 ft to GZ. Small roadside parking available on right side of road before the "Curvy Road - Next 3/4 Mile" sign. Stop at ‘Curves' sign. That is next to GZ. --- WESTBOUND: DO NOT try and stop or try to access cache or parking as you pass GZ. Instead just continue another 1000 feet past GZ and U-turn using the large trailhead parking area on left side of road just before big curve to left.
PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL of Hwy 14 traffic when parking and accessing the GZ. Lots of fast traffic here. Definitely NOT recommended for kids or pets.
Enjoy this easy cache find and remember to write down and save the Code Words found inside the cache on the cap of the container. You will need those code words later to complete your GeoTour Passport.
When replacing cache, please place the host off the ground facing east.
And after you've made the easy find of this cache, be sure to head over to the Cape Horn Scenic Overlook. Magnificent vistas there. Enjoy! Then continue happily on Hwy 14 to your next WSGA 20th Anniversary GeoTour target.
There is an unactivated travel tag for the FTF prize.
Cape Horn Scenic Overlook
The Cape Horn Scenic Overlook just nexdoor provides one of the most scenic views of the Columbia Gorge along WA Highway 14. On a clear day Beacon Rock and Skamania Island are easily visible upstream. And below in the River is Phoca Rock. But the best view is of the expanse of the Gorge overall. Just beautiful from here.
But... parking is very limited (3 cars) and is best accessed by east-bound travelers. And traffic passing the viewpoint is fast, close and heavy. So please be extra careful here.
And... because the viewpoint is very popular, it can have a litter problem. So let's do our part to help keep it clean. If you visit, please do CITO here and make this scenic site a cleaner place for all to enjoy. Thanks in advance!
There is a Waymark for this overlook (WM1K8M) by Rose Red that provides an excellent review of this site.
There is also a classic hike nearby of the Cape Horn Trail. Check out the Cape Horn Conservancy website for detailed info on the trail and its history.
In September 2002, a group of 19 concerned geocachers scheduled a meeting after hearing that the Washington State Parks was considering banning geocaches in the state park system. Out of this meeting, the Washington State Geocaching Association (WSGA) was "born" with its core values of promoting geocaching as a fun, family-oriented outdoor activity that increases awareness and appreciation of the environment and our parks and trails, provide opportunities for participants to enjoy geocaching and to socialize with other geocaches, educate park systems and land managers about geocaching and its benefits, increase awareness and support of the geocaching through interaction with other outdoor groups and the public, encourage low-impact geocaching and promote stewardship of our natural resources, and support "Cache In Trash Out" activities to help maintain parks and trail systems.
In 2022, the WSGA turns 20 years young. To celebrate this milestone, the WSGA is hosting a 20th-anniversary GeoTour. This GeoTour will give you the opportunity to travel to all corners of the Evergreen State while you search for 140 GeoTour caches. To make it easier to tackle such a large GeoTour, each of our 7 regional chapters will host a bite-sized GeoTour consisting of 20 GeoTour caches with the entire GeoTour consisting of 140 caches. To learn more about our GeoTour, please visit the GeoTour page on our website which you can find HERE. We hope that you enjoy getting back out on the road while touring around Washington State. If you have any questions about our GeoTour, you can reach out to us via the contact tab on our website.
