About 300m east from where you are currently standing is a relatively unknown tragedy of World War II, that occurred here at Machans Beach.
Eleven defence personnel were killed when a RAAF Hudson, A16-118 (VMZI-FM), went down during a cyclone just north of the mouth of the Barron River on March 5, 1945. The plane reportedly crashed on its approach to Cairns Airport.
Four bodies and the plane were never retrieved from the ocean.
While a memorial is in place at Trinity Beach, approximately 10km north of here, Machans Beach locals built their own memorial closer to the crash site to commemorate the lost; and to coincide with recent upgrades to the Keith Edwick Park along the foreshore.
Please take the time to read about the history of this memorial, which still resonates within the local community nearly 80 years after it occurred.
The geocache you are looking for is a small plastic container with room for swaps. It should (hopefully) be tide-proof.
