Bovec leži na severnem koncu Bovške kotline na nadmorski višini 450m, obdan z visokimi gorami med katerimi je najbolj prepoznaven Svinjak, Rombon in Kanin.
Zgodovina Bovca je dolga. Osamelec Ravelnik ob robu Bovškega polja je bil poseljen že v halštatski dobi kot utrjena višinska naselbina. Imela je mogočno obzidje, katerega ostanki so vidni še danes. V 1. st. pr. n. št. je tod vodila rimska cesta iz Akvileje v Noriško kraljestvo. O rabi priča najdba rimskega srebrnika s Kluž, kovanega leta 91 pr. n. št. Naselje se prvič omenja leta 1174, ko je grad v Klužah postal strateško pomembnejši od Ravelnika. Med prvo svetovno vojno je na Bovškem in v dolini Soče potekala frontna črta med italijansko in avstro-ogrsko vojsko. Spopadi na območju Rombona, Bovške kotline, Ravelnika, Slatenika, Krnskega pogorja ter pogorja nad Tolminsko kotlino in Kobaridom so za seboj pustili številne utrdbe, kaverne, strelske jarke, ostaline in pokopališča, ki jih danes povezuje Pot miru.
Bovec je v zadnjih letih postal pravo športno središče, saj ponuja veliko različnih možnosti rekreacije vseh vrst.

Bovec lies at the northern end of the Bovec basin at an altitude of 450m, surrounded by high mountains, the most recognizable of which are Svinjak, Rombon and Kanin.
The history of Bovac is long. The isolated Ravelnik on the edge of Bovška polje was inhabited already in the Hallstatt era as a fortified high-altitude settlement. It had a mighty wall, the remains of which are still visible today. In the 1st century BC n. no. the Roman road from Aquileia to the Kingdom of Nora led here. The use is evidenced by the discovery of a Roman silver coin from Cluj, minted in 91 BC. n. no. The settlement was first mentioned in 1174, when the castle in Cluj became strategically more important than Ravelnik. During the First World War, the front line between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies took place in Bovško and in the Soča valley. Clashes in the area of Rombon, Bovška kotlina, Ravelnik, Slatenik, Krnsko pogorje and the mountains above Tolminsko kotlina and Kobarid left behind numerous forts, caves, trenches, remains and cemeteries, which today are connected by the Path of Peace.
