521 W. State Street was originally the site of various dry goods stores including Joe J. Mickle and Son, Hudson Davis and later Cole & Davis. H.R. Bisby opened the Plaza Theatre at this location on April 4, 1941, with the movie “Western Union.” In 1991, the Bisby Estate donated the Plaza Theatre to the City of Garland and in 2001, after a total renovation, it reopened as a live arts venue as one of the defining landmarks of Garland's downtown square, just as it was 60 years before.
