The first Santa Fe depot in Garland was built in 1886, burned down in 1900 and replaced by this one in 1901. No exterior alterations have been made, though the original color is believed to be red with a green roof, and only a waiting room partition and restroom facilities were added inside.
In its early years, it served as a shipping point for farm produce. In 1972, the City of Garland moved the depot from its original site to its first home as a Landmark Museum located behind City Hall at Museum Plaza. In 1974 the Santa Fe Railroad Depot received a State of Texas Historical Marker designation. In 2014, the City moved the Santa Fe Depot again, to its current location at 363 N. Sixth Street to make way for a new housing development to the east and south of City Hall.
Next to the Depot, sitting on a short length of track sits a 1910 Pullman Coach Car. This car represents a
unique transitional design, combining a newer metal undercarriage with a wooden framed car. In 2014, it underwent an exterior refurbishment, returning its paint color and markings to their original 1910 specifications. Few of these cars are believed to exist today. The Pullman Coach Car 582 now stands as a reminder of the important role the railroads played in the development of the City of Garland.
