[IT] Piccola isola situata di fronte a piazza San Marco a Venezia. Separata dall'isola della Giudecca dal piccolo canale della Grazia, fa parte del sestier di San Marco. Inizialmente la città l'isola era di proprietà della famiglia patrizia dei Memmo; da ciò, il nome di Isola Memmia. Essendovi stata fondata, nell'VIII-IX sec., una chiesetta in legno intitolata a San Giorgio, l'isola prese il nome di "Maggiore" per distinguerla dall'isola di San Giorgio in Alga. Venne donata nel 982 dal doge Tribuno Memmo ad un monaco benedettino, Giovanni Morosini. Questi decise di bonificare l'area adiacente alla chiesa per costruire un monastero (il monastero di San Giorgio Maggiore), di cui fu il primo abate.
A testimonianza dell'importanza culturale raggiunta nei secoli dal monastero, si erge maestosa la facciata della Basilica di San Giorgio Maggiore, progettata da Andrea Palladio.
Durante il Regno d’Italia sul lato nord dell'isola furono creati la darsena, separata dal bacino di San Marco da una banchina provvista di due torrette, ed i magazzini di servizio. In questo modo l'isola poté essere individuata come porto franco.
Ad oggi, oltre alla bellissima chiesa e al campanile gemello a quello della Basilica di San Marco, è presente il complesso monumentale della Fondazione Cini, accessibile attraverso interessanti visite guidate disponibili tutti i giorni della settimana. Con esse si può ammirare il chiostro e il cenacolo palladiani, lo Scalone e la Biblioteca del Longhena, il labirinto di Borges, il Bosco dei Cipressi e molti altri luoghi nascosti!
[ENG] Small island located in front of San Marco square in Venice. Separated from the Giudecca island by the small Grazia canal, it is part of the San Marco sestier. Initially the city was the property of the patrician Memmo family; hence the name of Isola Memmia. As a small wooden church dedicated to San Giorgio was founded there in the 8th-9th century, the island took the name of "Maggiore" to distinguish it from the island of San Giorgio in Alga. It was donated in 982 by Doge Tribuno Memmo to a Benedictine monk, Giovanni Morosini. He decided to reclaim the area adjacent to the church to build a monastery (the monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore), of which he was the first abbot.
As evidence of the cultural importance achieved by the monastery over the centuries, the façade of the Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by Andrea Palladio, stands majestically.
During the Kingdom of Italy, the dock was created on the north side of the island, separated from the San Marco basin by a quay equipped with two turrets, and the service warehouses. In this way the island could be identified as a free port.
To date, in addition to the beautiful church and the twin bell tower to that of the Basilica of San Marco, there is the monumental complex of the Cini Foundation, accessible through interesting guided tours available every day of the week. With them you can admire the Palladian cloister and cenacle, the Staircase and the Library of Longhena, the labyrinth of Borges, the Bosco dei Cipressi and many other hidden places!
