Geocache Description:

Should be a quick P&G. Plenty of room for parking and a nice pull off not too far from GC. Make sure to check for wasp/hornet nests before reaching in.

Independence Day, July 4th, celebrates the independence of the United States from Great Britain. On July 2nd, 1776 the Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, voted in favor of independence and two days later (July 4th) the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the delegates from the original 13 colonies. Thomas Jefferson drafted the document.

In the summer of 1776 some colonists celebrated independence by holding mock funerals for King George III. There were also concerts, bonfires, and the firing of muskets and cannons. The first annual commemoration of independence was held in Philadelphia on July 4th, 1777 where the tradition of setting off fireworks to celebrate independence began. The U.S. Congress made July 4th a federal holiday in 1870 and in 1941 there was a provision made for federal employees to get it as a paid holiday.

Interestingly, both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams (who also played in a key role in obtaining independence), died on July 4th, 1826- the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
