What can 56 Men do?? Well, as it turns out, they can change history!! During 1776 the Second Continental Congress was meeting in Philadelphia. Nothing was happening and due to unusual circumstances, some delegates felt they needed to “declare” their intentions. The result was Mr. Jefferson’s finest work … The Declaration of Independence. This document stated the reasons for independence and a new nation was born. These men could have “hidden” behind the fact that they were a Congress. But they didn’t. Fifty-six brave Patriots affixed their personal signatures on the document!! They made jokes that they might hang separately or maybe they would hang together. After all … they were committing treason against the King … and England, the greatest nation of the time.
This new nation did not come easily. The colonists were fighting the British in 1776 under the command of General George Washington (He was not at the Congress and he did not sign the Declaration). But it was 5 years later in 1781 when columns of English soldiers were opposite the lines of American soldiers at Yorktown Battlefield. The English surrendered and the Americans (commanded by General Washington) won the day!!
The new nation was being formed. And it owes its beginnings to the signatures of 56 brave men who willingly signed their names to declare our Freedom from England. Thank God for these courageous Patriots!!
