Hattiesburg GeoTour

Cache Location
A once-bustling pharmacy in Hattiesburg, Smith Drug Company was a hub of activity for families in the Mobile-Bouie neighborhood, with its soda fountain and retail store, in addition to its medical supplies. But it also was a hub for voter registration during the civil rights era, as black Americans were fighting for equality. Smith Drug Co., founded by E. Hammond Smith in 1925, operated in the neighborhood for 55 years — until Smith retired in 1980. In January 2020, the City of Hattiesburg purchased the old pharmacy building, and in March 2022 Smith Drug Company was completely restored and reopened as an event venue and working soda fountain managed by the Hattiesburg Convention Commission, as part of the Sixth Street Museum District.
