The Paper Mill House primarily served as a residence for four families that worked on various mills along Darby Creek.  The original building was constructed in 1828, and an addition was built in 1845 to contain a general store that served the nearby community.  In the immediate area were the William Crosley Woolen Mill (1828-1861) and Casper S Garrett's Union Paper Mill (1869-1889).  Along the creek are archeological remains of both old mills, including building foundations, the millrace, and other traces of mill activity.

This structure was in ruins in the 1980s, and seemed destined for demolition.  However the historical significance of the building was recognized by a handful of civic-minded local residents, and through their efforts, the building was acquired by the Township and restored.  The Paper Mill House  now had a recreated general store from the mid-19th century amd a museum.  The house is open on Saturdays during July and August and for groups by appointment.  It is worth a walk up to the house to read the historical signs and enjoy the location near the stream.

Permission for this geocache was obtained from the president of the Newtown Square Historical Society.
