Columbia Borough played a big part in the building of America. From the frontier days to the Revolution, to the Civil War, to the birth of the industry, Columbia will give you a taste of American history.

In 1726, a Quaker named John Wright established a tiny settlement. At that time, it was frontier woodlands where he preached to the Indians along the Susquehanna River. The small town became known as Columbia in 1788. The prominent location along the Susquehanna River gave the tiny town big impact as a major transportation hub for those traveling by land, rail, and river to other destinations. While major businesses certainly included the transportation of lumber, coal, and assorted goods, the history also includes shuttling passengers across the river, ultimately labelling Columbia as the birthplace of the organized structure that we now know as the Underground Railroad.

The town celebrates the community's rich stories, past and present as those stories continue to provide a one of a kind sense of pride that is unique to the Susquehanna Valley. Today, Columbia is a destination for outdoor fun including hiking, biking, rock-climbing, and activities on the water. Columbia offers culture through its galleries and arts and crafts proprietors, and of course, its history is captured within the walls of its antique shops.  Whether you are here seeking adventure or whether you are here to discover the rich history of the Borough, Columbia has something to do. Hit the trails, take home a treasure when you shop the shops, or simply enjoy the restaurants. Our small town has a great deal to offer visitors.
