Najstariji tramvaj u Hrvatskoj počeo je prometovati 1884. u Osijeku. Sve do 1926., kada je elektrificiran, bio je to tramvaj na konjsku vuču. Time je Osijek postao prvi grad u Hrvatskoj i jedan od prvih gradova u ovom dijelu Europe s uvedenim tramvajskim prometom. Danas se tramvajski promet odvija na dvije dnevne linije, a njime upravlja GPP.

Toga, 10. rujna 1884, kao i potonjih dana, navala građana na konjski tramvaj bila je golema. Mnogi su morali samo gledati jer nisu stali u tramvajska kola u kojima je bilo 16 sjedala (prostor između sjedala bio je 60 cm, a površina sjedala 24 cm). Po osječkim ulicama prometovala su samo tehnički ispravna kola duga 5 m, široka 1,80 m i visoka 2,50 m. Tramvajski se vozni park sastojao od nekoliko zatvorenih i otvorenih (ljetnih) kola. Svaka tramvajska kola imala su svoj broj, a vukla su ih dva konja. Samo iznimno, gdje je cesta bila strmija, uprezao se i treći konj. Konja je bilo otprilike dva puta više nego kola, a svaki je konj prevalio 15 km na dan. (Po ugovoru društvo je moglo u promet pustiti lakša kola koja bi vukao samo jedan konj. Osim putničkih kola u promet su se mogla staviti i tovarna kola za otpremanje većih tereta, i to samo uz odobrenje gradskog zastupstva, ali nisu smjela ometati redoviti putnički promet.)

U tramvajskim kolima bio je uz kočijaša i kondukter. Za sigurnost putnika i nadgledanje prometa konjskog tramvaja društvo je angažiralo posebne, tzv. tramvajske stražare. Sve službene osobe zaposlene u tramvajskom prometu bile su jednako odjevene i — po zapisima iz toga vremena — veoma uljudne. Svaka neljubaznost završavala bi, uostalom, udaljavanjem s posla.

Po ugovoru cijena za vožnju (od jedne do druge postaje) nije smjela biti veća od 12 krajcara (filira) po osobi za jednu vožnju. Kartu nisu plaćala mala djeca držana na krilu, a za djecu do 10 godina, koja su u tramvajskim kolima sjedila na sjedalu, plaćala se polovice cijene jedne karte. Tramvajem su se besplatno vozili gradski redarstveni činovnici, činovnici gradskog i građevnog ureda, članovi gradske straže, i članovi vatrogasnih društava u službi. Društvo je imalo i pretplatne karte s popustom od 10%. Vozni cjenik i svaku promjenu cijene odobravalo je gradsko zastupstvo.

Brzina konjskog tramvaja nije bila baš velika: 7,5 km/h, a jednokolosiječna pruga s mimoilaznicom na važnijim stajalištima dodatno je usporavala pogon. Ali, u to doba i takva je vožnja bila prihvatljivija od pješačenja iz jednog dijela grada u drugi, pa je uvođenje tramvaja imalo za Osijek golemo značenje i budilo veliko zanimanje kod građana.

The oldest tram in Croatia started operating in 1884 in Osijek. Until 1926, when it was electrified, it was a horse-drawn tram. This made Osijek the first city in Croatia and one of the first cities in this part of Europe to introduce tram traffic. Today, tram traffic takes place on two daily lines, and it is managed by GPP.

Therefore, on September 10, 1884, as in the following days, the rush of citizens to the horse-drawn tram was enormous. Many had to just watch because they didn't get into the tram car, which had 16 seats (the space between the seats was 60 cm, and the seat surface was 24 cm). Only technically correct cars 5 m long, 1.80 m wide and 2.50 m high circulated on the streets of Osijek. The tram fleet consisted of several closed and open (summer) cars. Each tram car had its own number and was pulled by two horses. Only exceptionally, where the road was steeper, a third horse was harnessed. There were about twice as many horses as wagons, and each horse covered 15 km per day. (According to the contract, the company could put into circulation lighter carts that could be pulled by only one horse. In addition to passenger carts, freight carts could also be put into traffic for shipping larger loads, and only with the approval of the city representative, but they were not allowed to interfere with regular passenger traffic.

He was in the tram car with the coachman and the conductor. For the safety of passengers and monitoring of horse tram traffic, the company hired special, so-called tram guards. All officials employed in tram traffic were dressed the same and — according to records from that time — very polite. Any discourtesy would end, after all, in being removed from the job.

According to the contract, the price for a ride (from one station to another) should not exceed 12 krajcars (filler) per person for one ride. The ticket was not paid for small children held on the lap, and for children up to 10 years old, who were sitting on a seat in the tram cars, they paid half the price of one ticket. City police officials, city and construction office officials, members of the city guard, and members of the fire brigades on duty rode the tram for free. The company also had subscription tickets with a 10% discount. The train price list and every price change was approved by the city agency.

The speed of the horse-drawn tram was not very high: 7.5 km/h, and the single-track railway with a bypass at important stops further slowed down the drive. But, at that time, even such a ride was more acceptable than walking from one part of the city to another, so the introduction of the tram had a huge meaning for Osijek and aroused great interest among the citizens.
