Located roughly at the halfway point between Dallas and Houston is a I-45 rest area in Leona. We’ve stopped here many time over the years on our trips between Dallas and Houston. ChinaTrekker used to have a cache in this location, but after it went missing the cache was archived. This is just too good a spot to not have a cache.
Fort Boggy, named for its proximity to Boggy Creek, was built in 1840 and soon thereafter housed Texas Rangers to protect East Texas settlers. 75 people lived in 11 homes and 2 blockhouses while the Rangers patrolled an area between the Navasota and Trinity Rivers. Within a few years there were fewer threat of raids and the need for Fort Boggy was no longer vital. It remains significant to the history of Leon County. Nearby is the 1847 acre Fort Boggy State Park .
