Welcome to the Farewell to Finder’s Fest geo-art, brought to you by the Forest Minions! This series celebrates weird and unusual things throughout the Sunshine State. Please do not go to the posted locations. Rather, solve the challenging quiz found at the bottom of each page, for the final location. For the letterbox caches, please leave the stamp in the cache. They are not trade items. For the discerning traveler, we’ve included the GPS coordinates for these bizarre locations, when we were able to establish them.
Monkey Island – Location 28.7858, -82.6169
What is now a much loved attraction called Monkey Island, was once a little more like a monkey detention center. Developer G.A. “Furgy” Furgason had improved a dangerous sandbar in Homosassa Fl, by adding dirt, a mini lighthouse, and a few esoteric decorations. When building his nearby wildlife attraction, (now, Homosassa Wildlife State Park), he discovered that the monkeys he had imported were causing problems for guests.
Furgason moved the monkeys to his faux island, where folks continue to visit them.
