Welcome to the Farewell to Finder’s Fest geo-art, brought to you by the Forest Minions! This series celebrates weird and unusual things throughout the Sunshine State. Please do not go to the posted locations. Rather, solve the challenging quiz found at the bottom of each page, for the final location. For the letterbox caches, please leave the stamp in the cache. They are not trade items. For the discerning traveler, we’ve included the GPS coordinates for these bizarre locations, when we were able to establish them.
Stilsville – Location 25.6513, -80.1742
One mile off the Florida coast, in Biscayne National Park, are several small buldings, hovering over the ocean, on stilts. The homes that are left were once part of a larger community at sea that comprised 27 structures at its peak. Eddie Walker started Stiltsville back in the 1920’s, during the age of prohibition. The shacks, (they were nothing more than that at the time), served as gambling and alcohol dens for folks frustrated with state and natural laws. Fires, hurricanes and too much partying all took their toll on the buildings, until just seven are now left, after Hurricane Andrew swept through in 1992. Access is by boat only, and docking at and visiting the structures is by permit only, available through the Stiltsville Trust.
