Type O Negative was an American gothic metal band formed in Brooklyn, New York City in 1989.
The band originally consisted of Peter Steele (lead vocals, bass), Kenny Hickey (guitar, co-lead vocals), Josh Silver (keyboards, backing vocals), and Sal Abruscato (drums). Steele formed a new band with friends after his prevous group, Carnivore, broke up. After several name changes, the band settled on the name Type O Negative. After Sal left the group in 1993, he was replaced by Johnny Kelly.
The band's lyrics focused on themes of romance, depression and death, resulting in the nickname "the Drab Four".
Type O Negative's third album, Bloody Kisses, was released in 1993 and became the first record for Roadrunner Records to reach gold status in the United States.
The album mainly addressed themes of loneliness and heartbreak, with Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All) as one of the hit singles. The lyrics of the song detail a relationship with a woman involved in the Goth subculture and features many tongue-in-cheek references to Halloween, Nosferatu,
and Lily Munster. The song remains the band's best known song and their best-selling single.
Type O Negative went on to record four more albums from 1994 until 2007. Sadly, Peter Steele passed away on April 14, 2010.
