Glade was originally known as Plodorodnoye, meaning "fertile" in Russian. It was founded in 1911 as a Doukhobor colony, and quickly became home to over 1700 people. The iconic Glade ferry has been operating in one way or another since then. Apparently in the old days you simply yelled "Parome!" (ferry) when you wanted it to come to your side of the river.
The expansive resting place at this site holds many people, but so many without markers. Are these people forgotten? or is the idea of a gravestone less significant to different cultures? Take the time to stroll through, and remember the men and women who built this fertile community.
