Geocache Description:

The Ohrid Fortress, the symbol of the city without which one can not imagine its urban physiognomy and history, is one of the largest medieval fortification constructions in Macedonia. With its ramparts and walls, it covers the entire Ohrid hill. Except for the southern part, which is facing the lake, the hilly part of the city was protected with high walls and towers in the length of about three kilometres, all up to the Ohrid port. Throughout the history, the fortress has been destroyed, rebuilt and upgraded many times so that it carries the hallmarks of almost all historical epochs when Ohrid was ruled by the Romans, the Byzantines, Slavs and Ottomans. However, it is believed that the largest part of the walls of the Citadel and the suburban area, along with the preserved towers, dating back to the time of the Emperor Samoil, from 976 to 1014, and then to the time of his successors until 1018, when Ohrid was the capital of the first state of the Macedonian Slavs, because of what today the fortress is known as "Samoil's Stronghold". With its ramparts and fortified towers, it occupies the entire Ohrid hill that rises to 100 meters above the level of the lake. Depending on the configuration and the accessibility of the terrain the height of the ramparts differs from 3 to 16 meters.
