DESCRIPTION
Stavros is located on the peninsula of Akrotiri at a distance of 14 km from the town of Chania.
The starting point of this tour is at the main square of the small village, just next to the narrow beach line, the famous background in the movie of ‘Zorba the Greek’. The beach is surrounded by a circular bay and a small port at the edge, dominated by a huge rock with at 80 m height the cave of Lera (witch another catch to do if you like).
The bus has a main stop at this area, and you can also have a look at the small church behind,’ Τιμιος Σταυρος’, which has 14 September the celebration date! During the season (May- October) possibility to have a drink or a lunch at one of the taverns around the square to admire the view.
The walking tour is 8 km with 12 catches, can be done by a mountain bike as well, a lot of off road but no heavy climbing… and goes to the west side of the peninsula direction of the small bay of Tersanas. You will have a sea view towards Xania and the island of Thodorou. Not a lot of traffic, but be aware of touristic entrances of villas or apartments and some agriculture trucks than can pass by (this area we have a lot of watermelon fields, olive trees and vineyards).
DON’T FORGET you need minimum one liter of water to carry and shoes that can resist rocks and slippery underground.
