Geocache Description:

15 geological sites are spread around the Pilanesberg National Park. You are now at G4 which is about Kimberlite. Most of the answers to the questions to claim the Earthcache can be found on the information board at the site.

PLEASE DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR VEHICLE HERE.

Kimberlite is a magma that is bought to the surface during volcanic eruptions. Diamonds are crystals of carbon formed beneath the earth’s crust, about 15km below, and they are bought to the surface in this Kimberlite.

Kimberlite in the Pilanesberg was prospected for diamonds prior to 1925, however there is no record that diamonds were discovered here.

To claim this Earthcache you will need to send the answers to the following questions to us via our profile page.

  1. How old do they think the Kimberlite is here?

  1. How did Kimberlite get its name?

  1. The presence of what 3 minerals is a guide to locate Kimberlite?

  1. What shape is the polished specimen below the information board?

  1. Take a photo, while in your vehicle, of your caching name on a piece of paper with the information board in the background.

We hope that you might have garnered a bit of knowledge here. We did.
