Geocache Description:

15 geological sites are spread around the Pilanesberg National Park. You are now at G1 which is about Volcanic Tuff. Most of the answers to the questions to claim the Earthcache can be found on the information board at the site.

PLEASE DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR VEHICLE HERE.

Tuff is a type of rock made of volcanic ash ejected from a vent during a volcanic eruption. Following the ejection and deposition, the ash is combined (pressure and cementation process) into a solid rock.

When there is a volcanic explosion particles of difference sizes are ejected into the air. The course /larger particles land back on the ground first and the finer particles take longer to land. These explosive events can occur numerous times whereby layers of course and fine particles may be observed once the final ash is combined.

A variety of fragmental and ash layers can be seen on the weathered surface of the nearby outcrops.

To claim this Earthcache you will need to send the answers to the following questions to us via our profile page.

  1. What colour are the fragments in the polished rock from the earlier eruption in the area?

  1. What colour is the granite in the polished rock?

  1. Take a photo, while in your vehicle, of your caching name on a piece of paper with the information board in the background.

We hope that you might have garnered a bit of knowledge here. We did.
