The Murchison - Rushworth rail trail is not fully finished for people to walk or ride the full length. The finished rail trail is a 8-kilometre section from the Murchison Township to the rail bridge at Channel Inlet Road. The rest of the old railway track it unfinished to Rushworth. The Rushworth to Channel Inlet Road section is aimed to be completed March 2024, with funding from the local council. Once complete the trail will cover aprox. 19km.
In 1890 the railway line was constucted. It started at the Murchison East railway station and originally just stopped at the gold mining town of Rushworth. In 1914 it extended to Colbinabbin to transport grain etc. Rushworth also became a junction when a line was constructed to Girgarre in 1917. All of these railway lines were closed by 1987.
